VOGUE USA COVER STORY Gia Tang

Gia Tang

Taipei

For Tang, becoming a model meant a chance to see more of the world. She was 30 years old when she first traveled to the United States for work; now, at 37, she’s begun facing a different boundary: “The industry prefers the young,” she says. “It’s marketing, and I get it—but I also think that could change right now.” Once encouraged to withhold her age from clients (“If you don’t look like it, don’t say it” was the guiding principle), Tang refuses to do so any longer. “We were taught to be a certain thing and to do a certain thing—but we should never be ashamed of who we really are, especially as Asian women,” she says.
